In response to last weeks request I was able to get some additional details about the picture from last week’s Blog “A Toxic Start to the School Year”. The original picture came from a friends neighbor. The friend didn’t want her name to be used publicly because she ran a daycare in her home and didn’t want people to know the challenges she was having with her child and have people start thinking negatively about her business. If these chemical based cleaners were impacting her own child, what could those chemicals potentially be doing to the children that she was responsible for all day long?

My friend elaborated on the story as she experienced with her neighbor: “My neighbor had a daycare in her home. Her son was in first grade and had been diagnosed with dyslexia, sensory issues and as well as ADD. Each day, after the children left, she would “dis-infect” her home using a sundry of different products like bleach and pine scented commercial cleaners. She’d clean the floors and toys and table tops toilets and sinks, while her son would do his homework at the table in the daycare area, and while she would clean for the next day.

I happened to visit her while this process was going on and I noticed her son was really having difficulty writing his numbers. I pointed it out to her and then suggested that I bring over an alternative cleaner which didn’t affect the neurotransmitters of his young mind. I remember her saying, “ Are you suggesting that what I am usingto clean my house might be causing my son dyslexia?” I believe she agreed to the experiment only because she wanted to show me how preposterous I was being. So the challenge was on. She would clean with my cleaner on Monday evening.

After the children left , I went over to her home to create a controlled experiment. While she was cleaning , I got her son situated in the same room, at one of the daycare tables and he started writing his numbers. As you can see, there is a big difference in his ability and his hand to eye coordination. She was certainly caught off guard, never realizing that what she had been using was harmful, and she also questioned the validity of the experiment. “These products had to be safe I am able to purchase at most stores. If they cause damage like this, then why are they being sold? Are there no regulations? She cleaned with her usual cleaning products just one more time. It was conclusive. The cleaning products were
causing problems with her son’s behavior and his ability to think and write. “How many other lives had she been affecting by using those off the shelf cleaners, and why wasn’t there any regulation on them? That was the last time she used those chemical commercial cleaners. They were disposed of in the hazardous waste facility, because as she learned further, they are registered with the EPA as hazardous waste. L .Sheets – Boston MA”

Some of you might be like the neighbor thinking, this is preposterous. How could a cleaning product be causing health issues in my child? As parents, we all want what is best for our child. I can tell you I was willing to try anything regardless of how strange the suggested sounded. My kids would not be where they are today if I didn’t go with my gut and be open and willing to try something different. We don’t have alot of control over all of the other places where our children spend time where the air could be unknowingly filled with toxic chemicals, but the one thing we do have control over is the environment in our home. What if you were willing and open to create your own experiment? What if you were able to positively impact changes in your childs behavior, asthma or allergies? What if your family could be another success story? This was just one personal story, there are many others. I will continue to share other stories of families that have seen positive impacts to their families by making changes in both nutrition as well as removing the toxins from the environment.

I don’t know about your kids, buy mine officially went back to school yesterday! I heard one of the Traders Joe’s in a local town nearby was actually giving out free mimosa’s. While I didn’t participate in the mimosa celebration, I believe our entire family is ready for the change that the school year brings. I truly enjoyed the time I spent with my family over the summer, but am excited for the kids to have a bit more structure in their days and start the school year off on a positive note. One of the things that you can do is to help create a good Toxic Free environment for schoolwork at home.

As the cycle of homework begins, we all have some type of struggle with getting our kids to do homework. But did you realize that the cleaning products that you or your cleaning lady “if you are one of the lucky one that have one” uses, can impact your childs environment in how well they do with completing their homework?

Here are 3 sample pictures of an 8 year old boy doing homework They might be a little bit hard to read, but I think you’ll get the point.

1) FIRST ROW – While mom cleaning the house – You can see that his hand writing is not the greatest and is a bit backwards or dyslexic.

2) SECOND ROW – Taking out cleaning products and used non-toxic ones, just to see what would happen – You can see the results that the handwriting is neater and not backwards.

3) THIRD ROW- Added Toxic Cleaners Back – Mom couldn’t believe the results that she saw, so she added the chemical cleaners back in her home to see what type of results she would get. Amazingly enough, she saw a decrease in her child’s work, just like the first time.

This sounds like something so simple, but I am sure there are some skeptics out there saying really??? Is this true?

YES REALLY – I can share many other examples with you on real life stories of how making a simple change like cleaning products can have a positive impact on your family. While we moms think that a “Clean Smelling House” creates a good environment for our kids, we need to think again about how our personal like of the smell of our favorite cleaning products might actually be producing fumes that create the Not So Best Environment for our kids. We need to accept that Clean has no smell and begin to create a Non-Toxic Environment for our families.

The last two weeks we talked about the importance of nutrition, but this week I wanted to introduce the second video that I was not able to share related to Toxins in our environment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS33IGiisJQ. When I first saw the video I was shocked by the information. I couldn’t believe that everyday products sold at our local stores could be harmful to us. How could our government allow that to happen?! While I was shocked, I was so overwhelmed with my children’s dietary issues that I didn’t have the time to really focus on understanding the REAL impacts chemicals could be having on our health.

Research is showing more that many kids who have asthma or allergies may be caused by chemicals in the environment. Since my kids didn’t have allergies or asthma this was not a topic that I really thought I needed to spend a lot of time on. An odd but interesting fact about my family. I will firmly admit, I am not the world’s greatest cleaner. In fact, my mom would probably tell you that I don’t clean enough. With a family of 6, when I looked at my priorities, cleaning was NOT one of the big rocks, (nor a favorite item on the to do list). I had to pick my battles and cleaning was one of those things I chose not to focus alot of my attention on. Plus I didn’t want to pay money on all of the different cleaning products or a cleaning lady.

Then I realized something. There are lots of kids with allergies and asthma these days, you would think the chances were great that at least one of my 4 kids would have developed some kind of environmental allergy, but that is not the case. I have other friends who are constantly cleaning their home and their kids all have some type of allergy. I thought to myself, what if there really is something to the relation of chemicals to allergies and asthma? Did I find out a dirty little secret? For those just starting your families, if you don’t use chemical cleaners, is there really less of a chance for your child to form asthma and allergies? For those whose kids already have some type of environmental allergy, if you removed toxic cleaners from your home, could you help cure your child from their asthma or allergies? There might something here worth thinking about.

I am a full time executive and mom of 4 boys who lives in Naperville Il.  I have worked in the corporate world for 17 years and have played a variety of roles within External Consulting, IT and HR and have been able to manage a good work life balance over the years.    Even though I commuted to the Chicago office regularly,  I was able to maintain some type of modified or flexible schedule to attend to my family’s needs, but there were days when I left at 5:30am and didn’t get back home until after 7pm, thinking to myself how am I going to keep this all together?   One of my passions is analyzing data.  So when two of my children were diagnosed with health issues, I made good use of my analytical skills and buried myself into learning as much as I could about health and nutrition to help my boys.  When my son Matt was 8 years old, he was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD.  Around the same time, my son Andy at 15 months old had the speech and development of a 5 month old and a few months after that had 2 seizures.  My pediatrician said, to put my older son on meds and that there was nothing wrong with my younger son.  As a mom, you just know when something is not right and I was determined to find answers to help my kids.  I prayed and searched for answers to help my children without the use of drugs or medications.  God answered my prayers and in my journey I have found a wealth of information in the alternative or holistic healing field that has helped make a positive difference in my family.  I am passionate about health and nutrition and have learned more about the body than I ever thought I would.  Now I want to share my story and what I have learned in hopes of helping other families.
