Add fresh lemon to your water and you will be amazed at the health benefits it will provide.

Hydration: Lemon has phytochemicals (nutrition) that our body craves, as you begin drinking it you will find your body begins to crave it. Unlike other citrus fruits, lemon and lime do NOT contain sugar, so while lemons are pre-digestively acidic, they are post digestively alkaline, which will help with your pH balance. It also appears to soften the some of “the gunk” that builds up in your organs and allows it to flush through.

Most of our American diets are TOO acidic and we need to bring our PH balance back to normal by adding alkaline foods. (I’ll explain acid vs. alkaline diets in a future blog)

A few other interesting facts…

  • We are supposed to receive minerals from our food and our water. Today our water is so degraded there has been a decline in the nutrition of water.
  • When we drink water our body should hold onto the water, break down the molecular structure as it absorbs the nutrition. If our body is too acidic or not performing as it should water will go straight through, meaning we drink it and less than an hour goes by and we urinate.
  • When we add lemon or lime to our water, our body has phytochemical nutrition. During the process of holding onto the water to absorb this nutrition, our body has MORE TIME to break down the molecular structure and hydrate our cells
  • We have 20 different cell sizes, if we don’t breakdown our water small enough, our cells cannot hydrate, thus urination right after drinking.
  • Dehydration is one of the major reasons of overacidification. (Deficits in hydration, nutrition, and too much incoming acid.)

As a kid my parents always used to order water with lemon when we went out to restaurants. Part of it was a healthier choice, but the other reason was because it was much cheaper than buying a drink. As a result, I got into the habit at an early age of drinking water with lemon, not because of its health benefits, but rather I liked it. I have gone on and off with cutting up a fresh lemon and adding it to my water but after having learned of the health benefits, I have personally made more of an effort to ensure I have enough fresh lemons in the house and add them to our drinks daily. The kids actually like to add it to their water as well.

If you are one of those people who are trying to cut the regular or diet soda habit, try switching out one of your normal daily drinks with a glass of water with real lemon. You might just find out how much your body thrives on the nutrition it will be receiving.

Let the Madness Begin – It is that time of the year for the best college sport event of the season. “The March Madness Basketball Tournament”. With four boys I am usually at some type of sporting event, whether I enjoy the sport or not. It’s all part of being a “boy mom”. I have learned how to better appreciate baseball, hockey, soccer, wresting, football etc… but basketball happens to be near and dear to my heart.

I always enjoy this time of the year with my husband and boys. As a mom, I am always looking for fun things to do with my kids that are different and this time of the year enables that for our family. Everyone in the family gets to fill out a bracket (even Andy my 3 year old). While he doesn’t really know the teams, it doesn’t matter, b/c he feels like he is part of the family fun. When the kids were young, my boys wouldn’t pick teams based on standings, but rather which mascot sounded cooler. It was fun to see them rooting for their team, especially because many times they would pick the underdogs. The excitement in the family is so much fun, as the kids get creative and build out brackets on large posterboard to keep score.

This year the family is driving to Kansas City to watch the tournament live. (Hence why this blog is being sent out early.) We will be out of town with no computer as our family enjoys our first ever live tournament together.

Six live basketball games, sounds so exciting. The boys (and mom) can’t wait. As part of the annual fun, we have found basketball and college trivia to keep the season even more exciting. Here are some links to some fun ideas to make the tournament that much more fun. http://www.sporcle.com/games/tags/ncaatournament

Eating healthy is going to be an interesting challenge these 5 days, but planning ahead, setting expectations and giving in just a little, will make the trip so much more enjoyable. I went shopping last night and the boys made a list, apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, peanut butter and celery, nuts , bottles of water and of course a bag of cookies and chips to share. A mom’s gotta give in just a little, especially when the boys were the one’s who made the list with all the good stuff for the road. They will most likely end up having hot dogs, nachos, pretzels etc… at the game, but as long as its balanced, mom will be happy. I am hopeful that setting expectations and giving in just a little (not being a complete food nazi ) will minimize any complaints or meltdowns. It’s refreshing when the boys begin to make better choices without mom hovering over them.

I know everyone’s spring breaks are at varied times during this time of year. I hope you are all able to enjoy time with the family, stay healthy and splurge by giving in just a little.

There has been overwhelming demand for some recipe ideas, so I thought I would highlight a good one this week. My husband has always been a big Prego and Ragu fan because its simple and easy to pop in the microwave. But I have been playing around with a homemade tomato sauce recipe that he now likes.

I believe there are 2 secrets to this recipe. One is using fresh herbs. People used to tell me all the time how much better fresh herbs were than dried ones. So last year, I decided to learn how to grow my own herbs. It’s actually a lot easier than I thought. But if you don’t have fresh, dried will still work. I have a few basic herbs that I grow every year and try to use fresh herbs as much as I can. The other secret ingredient is a little cheese. So I admit, my husband is NOT a cheese fan. He thinks parmasean cheese is the stinkiest cheese in the world. So when I experiment, I have to be careful. I have found that since mozzerella cheese is on pizza, it’s a safe choice. I think it makes it a little thicker and creamier, but you don’t have to add it.

Tomato Sauce Recipe –

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Celery Stalk finely chopped (I have also put finely chopped zucchini in as well)
  • 2 Cloves garlic
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil (translates to 1/2 tsp dried)
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh oregano
  • 2 TBsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 28 oz. can whole tomatoes, including the juice, or 1 3/4 pound of fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 c Mozzerella Cheeze

Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Stir in onion, garlic and celery and cook until soft. Pour in tomatoes and tomato paste, stir, reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Stir in parsley, basil, oregano, salt and pepper; simmer 15 minutes, uncovered. Sprinkle the cheese at the end and stir until melted. Serve and ENJOY!

Food companies aren’t calling it addiction, but rather Cravability. It is making foods taste as good as possible so people will be allured to buy and eat more. In the end, more profit for the company. I wanted to share some key tips from the Doctor Oz episode on “The Big Food Cover Up” on how companies are keeping you addicted to processed food as well as what Cravability really means…

Cravability sounds like a fancier word, but it really means that your body is dependent on a substance and unable to function without more of it. That is what is happening with our bodies. You know how you feel when you get a craving for sugar, salt caffeine etc…. Your body just doesn’t function as “normal” until you give your body what it is thrirsting for. Take any of the words below and that is what your body wants:

Commanding
Requiring
A
sking
V
– coVeting (Wanting)
Alluring/Attracting

From the Dr. Oz Episode
1) Sugar – It makes food taste better, helps food stay on the shelves, make donuts fry up bigger, makes cereals look nice and toasty. There is a “bliss point” when you consume the right amount of sugar. Companies know this and find this optimumum level of sugar to create the cravings.

2) Salt – the most magical ingredient. Salt is used to make products last longer, add crunch to crackers, add colors to foods and lastly to create a terrific burst of flavor. Dr. Oz did a visual representation of regular salt verus kosher salt. The hollow salt (kosher salt) showed how bubbles burst with flavor. Kosher salt looks like snow and sticks to foods better because it is hallowed out on the inside, so saliva gets to it quicker for an ultimate flavor burst to the brain. Also when you reheated foods, the fat oxidizes and salt is the one thing that companies use to mask the flavor.

What is the #1 food on the gateway to obesity. The Potato Chip – Salt hits the tongue first, flavor burst, then hits the brain, starch in potato converts to sugar in your body. It is drowned in fat and fried to a crisp, covered in gobs of salt for the explodsive flavor burst, then sugar gets released (from the starch) and absorved into your bloodstream, but you feel that bliss point.

As consumers, once we become educated on what is happening in the industry, we can now get ahead of the problem. The industry is as hooked as we are. They are stuck and don’t know what to do. If we as consumers keep buying the products, companies will keep making them, but if we STOP buying their products, they won’t be worth making any longer.

What can you do when shopping in a grocery store?
– Be aware of what to look for
– Shop on the end aisles
– Purchase fresh fruit and veggies
– Look high and low on shelves (to find items least amount of sugar & “Bad Stuff” – Stop buying the Bad Stuff with all the added, sugar, salt & fat(The processed foods)
