Most women out there are focused on the health and well being of their families and many times don’t make it a priority to take care of themselves.  I hear many excuses and women tend to say they are too busy working, or taking care of the house and the family to think about preventative maintenance of their health.  I am here to tell you that there are some simple powerful things you can do to protect yourself against illness, chronic disease and even the flu.

The month of January is Cervical Cancer Awarenss Month and a good time to raise awareness for women to be the examples for our families by taking charge of our own health and implement some new healthy habits in the year 2013.

A key to your body healing itself, is fueling up on a nutrient-rich, whole foods diet.  If you take a look at the picture, it’s amazing how these fruits and veggies have a similar shape to the female organs.  Coincidence? I think not.  There are many other examples of foods that are shaped like the organs they helps to support.  God knew what he was doing when he created each and every natural ingredient out there. Here are five foods that support female reproductive health.

1) Avocados offer powerful free radical fighting compounds in their oil. They can help fight against free-radical attacks at the cellular level.  Plus they are packed with a variety of different vitamins and minerals.

2) Eggplants are a rich source of phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, which has antimutagenic (anti-cancer), antimicrobial, anti-LDL (bad cholesterol) and antiviral properties.

3) Pears can help lower insulin resistance and the risk of type 2 diabetes in women. The fiber in pears also helps bind with bile acids and reduce the risk of certain types of cancers.

4) White Vegetables have anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory nutrients that boost the immune system. Examples of white veggies include garlic, onions, cauliflower, and daikon radish.

5) Omega-3 Fats are important to help fight inflammation. Some good sources of  Omega-3s are flax seed oil, chia seeds, walnuts, and oily fish such as wild caught salmon, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies.

If you can’t read the small print, one avacado each week helps to balance hormones, shed unwanted birthweight and prevents cervical cancers.  If you like guacomole, this is a GREAT way to boost your system with a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals.  It’s simple and easy to make at home.  All you need is Avacado, Garlic, Red Onion, Tomato and Lime.  Or try this healthy avacado dessert recipe below.  The chocolate masks the avacado, so your kids won’t even know the good stuff thats in it.

Here is a delicious healthy dessert treat – Chocolate Avacado Mouse 12 ounce bittersweet chocolate 2 teaspoons  cinnamon 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 large ripe Avacado (pitted and peeled) 3/4 cup light brown sugar 6 egg whites

Melt the chocolate with cinnamon and chili powder. Puree the avacado and brown sugar in food processor until smooth.  With machine running pour in chocolate. Using a stand mixer, beat the egg whites until they form a soft peak.  Fold the Chocolate mixture into the egg whies.  Pour the mouse into 6 small serving bowls and refrigerate.

ENJOY!!!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I wanted thank all of the people that supported Prop 37 in the November election. For those of you that are unaware, Prop 37 was an attempt in the state of California to mandate the labeling of Genetically Modified (GM) foods across the state. As Americans, we have a right to know what is in our foods so that we can make informed choices for ourselves.

Currently unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration, genetically modified ingredients are found in up to 70 per cent of food on the shelves of grocery stores across the US, including many foods and beverages that contain high fructose corn syrup. 85 per cent of US corn is genetically engineered (which include corn meal and corn syrups ingredients), or traces of soybean, (where 91 percent of soy is GE which includes oil, flour, lecithin, and protein extract ingredients.)

For thousands of years, food was grown without the need to modify what nature naturally intended. Many companies in the food industry have now determined that there is a need to genetically modify our foods. GM foods have had genes from other plants or animals inserted into their genetic code for various reasons, such as resistance to pests, improved taste or longer shelf life. There is still much controversy on the health impacts of GMO’s, but there is evidence by many people who support natural and organic eating that GMO’s cause damage and health issues to our bodies. Some emerging studies have linked biotechnology to organ damage, reproductive problems, autoimmune disorders, and cancer among other health related issues. There are 61 countries across the world that require foods to be labeled with GMO’s, but we don’t have that luxury in the US. “The European legal system: GMOs cannot be put on the market without approval, whether it’s a food product made from GM crops or seeds for GM plants. In 2004, a new, fundamentally revised legal system took effect in all 25 EU Member States. The essential foundations of the EU’s policies are tight safety standards and safeguarding freedom of choice for consumers and for farmers. ” GMOCompass.org

The purpose of modifying our foods is certainly not for any known health benefits, but to promote big business and our fast pace lifestyles. Notice the amount of money spent by big businesses to persuade people NOT to support the bill.

While the bill did not pass (with a 47.6% to 52.4% at the polls), this movement has fundamentally changed the conversation on GMO’s in the US. There were many grassroots efforts in California and across the country where people and companies stood up for democracy and labeling of genetically modified foods and supporting our legal right to know what is in our foods.

The people who run these companies care a great deal about doing the right thing such as Dr. Mercola, Dr. Bronner’s, Lundberg Family Farms, Nutiva, Amy’s Kitchen, Organic Valley, Clif Bar, Udi’s, Earth Balance, Annie’s Homegrown, Applegate, Eden Foods and Good Earth Natural Foods.

If you are looking to purchase foods where you can feel comfortable knowing what is in them, I encourage you to support these natural and organic companies who have stepped up to the plate and stood behind their customers and this grassroots movement to label GMO’s

Today is “Food Day”.  A nationwide celebration and movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Created by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is powered by a diverse coalition of food movement leaders, organizations, and people from all walks of life. Food Day addresses issues as varied as health and nutrition, hunger, agricultural policy, animal welfare, and farm worker justice. The ultimate goal of Food Day is to strengthen and unify the food movement in order to improve our nation’s food policies.

Food Day’s national priorities address overarching concerns within the food system and provide common ground for building the food movement. They aim to:

  • Promote, safer, healthier diets
  • Support sustainable and organic farms
  • Reduce hunger
  • Reform factory farms to protect the environment and animals
  • Support fair working conditions for food and form workers

In the past 40 years, the way our food is produced, distributed and eaten have changed enormously.  If you are interested in learning more about the actions you can take to help work towards a healthy, sustainable, affordable, and fair food system, check out the food day website.  www.foodday.org.   You can also look for any local events for you and your family to attend.  I am actually giving a Kids Health Seminar in our local Napeville area to help support the cause.

If you are not able to attend any local events, try and make it a priority next week and commit to doing at least one thing for the day that you know is healthy:

– Drink water all day – Ensure you eat a healthy breakfast (no skipping meals) – Make all of your meals for the day – Do not eat any processed foods for the day – No snacking between meals  (or if you do snack, only healthy choices) – Raid your pantry and get rid of stuff you know is no good – Read nutrition labels – Buy organic produce

Do one of these things for a day and then see how you feel.  If you do them multiple days in a row, I am certain you will feel better and have more energy and maybe you will be able to begin to make them a habit.  Good luck!

People have asked me, where do u get your ideas for your blog?  They come from a variety of places, a response to a previous blog, an article I read, an event that occurred, something from my nutrition classes, but this week the idea came at my sons baseball game.  I happened to get there early and watch all of the kids rushing to get to practice before the game.  Many of them running with some type of fast food item being shoved down their throats french fries, burger, nuggets and some sort of sugary drink, so that they had something to eat before the game.

While I totally understand squeezing in a meal to ensure our kids eat, it is really not the best choice to feed them all that processed food before a game.  A friend of mine is a volleyball coach and she said that she has had to pull parents aside and encourage them to not have their child fill up on fast food, a slushie or a big gulp before a game. The kids do not have the energy they need to function during the game.  It is not only not good for them, but it impacts the team when a player is not at their best.

I will admit, I have been that mom before just trying to get by.  With four very active kids, I used to drive thru somewhere all the time.  Why not? I thought, it’s an easy way to get them food and they won’t complain about eating it.  Well I have learned my lesson the hard way and now try to limit the amount of drive thru runs by planning ahead.  For those of you whose children are smaller, it is much easier to start out developing healthy habits than it is to change bad ones.

In this situation it would be better to give your child an apple, a banana,  some type of protein bar or shake, or some nuts ( if they can have them)  to give them fuel before the game.    Remember, food is fuel, and if we don’t put in the right type of fuel, our bodies wont function properly and our kids won’t be at their best.   Most food portions are way out of control as it is and while these options are not a full meal, it will give them the energy needed to sustain them and be a healthier choice.

Last week my son had his first hockey game for his AA travel hockey team.  We said we were going to go out for lunch to celebrate my other sons 13 birthday.  Danny said, “I can’t go mommy.  I need to make sure I eat healthy before the game.  I can’t eat junk.” I told him that we would go to a sit down restaurant (not fast food) where I would help him make a healthier choice.  He and I shared a salad with grilled chicken. He ended up playing a great game and scored 4 goals that evening.  He was proud of himself and knew that making a healthier choice before the game made a difference in his performance.

I have to admit it is moments like this when the boys realize themselves how food actually makes them feel, that it makes it worth all of the pain and heartache of changing their diets around to focus on the healther choices, which in today’s society is NOT always easy to do.

The next time you are running late or are trying to squeeze in some fuel before an event; For Meals on the Run, think about keeping one these on hand and ready to go – a piece of fruit – a granola bar or zbar – a bag of nuts – better yet a home made Protein bar

– 1 cup of Peanut Butter OR Sun Butter
– 1 cup oatmeal
– 1 cup protein powder (We use Shaklee or Melaleuca Protein Powder)
– 1/2 cup raw natural honey
– depending on the type of butter you may need to add a tsp of water if its too dry

No baking necessary. You can roll them into balls, or shape into bars and put in the frig. They look like raw cookie dough balls, but much healthier.  For an added treat, you could dip them in chocolate, coconut or crushed nuts and ENJOY!

A picture says a thousand words, but in this case, it was a video with no sound that was very intriguing to everyone.  I wanted to start out with the link to the first video which can be found on utube.  It is in regards to the lack of nutritional content in our foods today and the impacts to our bodies of being overfed and undernourished.  I will fully admit I was very intersted in this video myself, as I came across this at the time I was starting to focus on nutrition for my kids.  I always knew my kids didn’t eat the best, but this was one of those aha moments.  It was like a sign from God saying, listen to your gut, you are going in the right direction.  Sometimes we need those little reminders and some sort of affirmation to know that what we think and feel is the right way to go.  This video was one of those moments for me.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2OOHzJyIAQ

Each person and family is at a diffferent place in their lives when it comes to their health.  Most of the information I will share in my blogs will be beneficial to each and every one of you in your own time.  Maybe you are not ready to focus on an area like cutting down on processed foods, it is important to know that it is OK to be right where you are in your journey.  There is no right or wrong place to be and you will know when it is right to dig deeper into a particular area.  Trust your gut, if you have a feeling or idea that comes to your head, there is a reason for it.  There is no quick fix or miracle answer, but if you focus on taking action one simple step at a time, you will be truly amazed at the positive difference you can make in your family.

Feel free to use this blog as a resource for you and your family.  I will try to provide a variety of different experiences, perspectives, opinions, topics, tough decisions, aha moments etc… to create a community of support for each other on our journeys. Please feel free to share the presentation and any info in the blog with anyone you feel would benefit from this information.  If you ever have a topic you would like to hear more about, please share it with me and I will feature it as a future blog topic.

Here is to the first of many powerful steps we can take to transform our families to good health.
